Our world is a unique and precious resource, one we want students to be amazed by and seek to protect for future generations. Increasingly it is one which is under threat from climate ch

ange, misuse of plastics, declining biodiversity and depletion of resources in the natural world.

At Wildern School, our curriculum programmes, enrichment opportunities and wider student leadership enable students to take an active part in promoting environmental awareness and sustainability across the school campus.

The school continued to achieve recognition with Eco-Schools Green Flag Award status, awarded in Summer 2026 with Distinction and continues to review and plan Eco activities around the themes of Litter, Transport and Biodiversity over the next academic year.

Eco Changemakers

Rationale and focus for the group:

• Identify and implement projects to develop sustainability at Wildern

• Promote recycling and a ‘no litter’ campaign across the school

• Organise the big clean community event 

• Represent Wildern at eco organisation platforms

• Identify and implement eco changes that will benefit our school

• Continue to work towards sustaining the green flag award

• Support and look after the new wellbeing garden

• Report progress and developments back to SLT each term

The Eco Changemakers Group have organised Great Big Litter Picks around the school site, the local neighbourhood and River Hamble County Park in coordination with students, parents, the wider community and Eastleigh Borough Council. As student leaders, the Eco Changemakers Group have previously led publicity and awareness campaigns on Climate Change by creating a flash event linked to COP26. Their most recent campaign has been around promoting active travel to school, participating in the Active Travel Ambassadors scheme working alongside Eastleigh Borough Council and ModeShift. This has involved presenting to councillors and local businesses at Campaign Junctions and organising whole school competitions to encourage students to cycle, scoot or walk to school.

The students in Eco Changemakers Group have led fundraising events which resulted in each tutor group adopting an animal of choice through the WWF to support animal conservation. In addition, the Eco Changemakers Group led Year 7 students in the timed observation of our birdlife in the school grounds, as part of the Great British Birdwatching Survey. Both of these support global biodiversity. 

The Eco Changemakers Group strives to ensure their voices are heard by as many students as possible through tutor activities, social media, competitions and poster campaigns to inspire all students to make changes and seek out a sustainable future for our planet.
