Young Carers
Text
“A young carer is someone aged under 18 who cares for a family member who, due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction, cannot cope without their support.” Carers Trust
Supporting young carers is an important aspect of our pastoral support at Wildern. These students take on caring responsibilities at home due to family members having long-term medical or personal problems. At Wildern, we also recognise students who do not have direct caring responsibilities for their family member(s) but may face a more challenging experience at home because of a loved one.
Being a young carer can significantly impact a young person’s daily life and can present a number of challenges in fulfilling the expectations and demands of school. Click here for more information.
At Wildern, we support young carers by keeping an open dialogue about their caring circumstances, hosting a weekly young carers breakfast club, and inviting students to events and trips that can build friendships with other young carers, broaden life skills and foster career aspirations.
We also have a staff member designated to identifying and supporting young carers. Currently, this is Mrs Duncombe who has been our Young Carers Coordinator for the last 2 years.
Parent Identification Form - if your child is a young carer or you think your child might be a young carer, please complete this simple parent form - click here.
Eastleigh Young Carers - offer fantastic provision outside of school and we highly recommend getting in contact and completing a referral form - click here.
Finally, please do not hesitate to contact the school where we can discuss further opportunities to support your child at youngcarers@wildern.org.
