Philosophy

"Unlocking the Mind, Empowering the Future."

In the Psychology Department, our vision is to foster an environment of deep curiosity, critical thinking, and empathy. We challenge students to look beyond the surface of human behaviour, equipping them with the scientific tools to understand themselves and the diverse world around them.

 

Our Intent & Learning Journey

While Psychology officially begins as a GCSE option in Year 9, our KS3 intent is focused on building the foundational curiosity and critical thinking skills required for the social sciences. We introduce psychological concepts through cross-curricular links in English, science, history, education for life, and tutor time sessions. Psychology is an exceptionally popular choice at GCSE. We follow the AQA specification, which offers a rigorous and engaging introduction to the discipline.

 

Exam Board & Assessment Overview

  • Exam Board: AQA

  • Tiering: There are no tiers in AQA GCSE Psychology. All students sit the same papers, and grades 9 to 1 are available to all candidates.

  • Assessment: 100% exam-based. 

  • Two papers sat at the end of Year 11.

Topics Covered

Paper 1: Cognition and Behaviour (50%)

  1. Memory: How do we remember, and why do we forget?

  2. Perception: How our brains interpret the world around us.

  3. Development: Brain development and education/learning theories.

  4. Research Methods: How psychologists design and execute scientific studies.

Paper 2: Social Context and Behaviour (50%)

  1. Social Influence: Conformity, obedience, and crowd behaviour.

  2. Language, Thought & Communication: How language shapes mindsets.

  3. Brain & Neuropsychology: The structure and function of the nervous system.

  4. Psychological Problems: An introduction to mental health, depression, and addiction.
